Project Description

The redevelopment of the Milan trade fair site involved the dismantling of the former Fiera building and the construction of three tower blocks for office space, residential apartments and parking areas, while ordinary life continued in the Portello neighbourhood.

Work started in 2007 and is expected to conclude in 2018.

So the environmental impact of a building site of this scale in a residential area is a particularly delicate matter.

The City Life Consortium turned to Matis to find a solution which combined operational demands with those of normal life in the district.

To meet the client’s criteria, Matis designed and developed a system of free-standing, modular anti-noise/anti-dust barriers christened MOBI: modules 8 metres tall, to be moved according to the area affected by the various phases of the work, to preserve quality of life in the surrounding residential area.

During the most invasive operations, the barriers were used effectively, as may be seen from the page dedicated to the Environmental Observatory for the site, which can be viewed on the City Life website.
